Antelope Transit´s next destination is one of Angola’s renown institutions, Luanda International School (LIS). LIS is a private, nonprofit, and coeducational IB world school, offering programs for those ages 3 to 18. Here, tourists will be able to learn more in depth about the history of education in Angola and witness how the systems work first-hand. Despite being free, primary education in Angola has been a major concern throughout the years due to civil war. The war left the government too poor to sufficiently fund schools in Angola, causing deficiency in quality academic material and facilities. Buildings were destroyed and the possibilities of school closing due to extreme weather were very likely. Students also often had to provide their own supplies, even as far as bringing their own chair to class. There were a lack of trained teachers in Angola and many who would take the exam wouldn’t pass. Even though budgets were increased in the early 2000s, it still wasn’t enough to fully aid in the reconstruction of schools and other issues. If they wanted to further their education, it meant moving to a regional capital city, such as Luanda, and heavy expenses.
The thing that’s special about Luanda International School is that they strive to ensure quality education for those applicable. Even though it is a private institution and by no means free, LIS is strongly dedicated in learning and offers a variety of curriculum and opportunities for all their students. They believe in a happy school community and genuinely enforce the promotion of academic achievement through understanding and not repetition. On the school’s website, they even have a list of their philosophies and objectives that range from respect, clarity, rigour, and sustainability. Their goal is to make sure that when an individual moves onto the next level of education, it is a smooth and easy transition. Since it is an international school, they have a student body of 686 children from all around the world, summing up to 50 different countries.
To conclude the significance of this stop, the civil war has brought upon a lot of burdens on the people of Angola, especially the youth. It became a barricade and prevented them from getting the proper education they needed for years. Only to this day has the education system been slowly improving and returning to a state of normality. However, in spite of the poor conditions they’ve been learning in, their scholarship and dedication to their academics and community hasn’t decline.
